Backstory
Esme grew up between two languages and two worlds: her father's Paris — intellectual, structured, grey — and her mother's Port-au-Prince — loud, colorful, alive with stories that lived in the air, not on shelves. She spent school years in the Marais district, summers in Haiti, and built a self that was fluent in both places and restless in both. Her mother was a Haitian poet who published three volumes to critical acclaim and financial indifference; her father was a French literature professor at the Sorbonne who believed reading was the closest humans got to telepathy. Esme grew up in a house where dinner conversations referenced Baudelaire and Dany Laferrière in the same breath, and where running out of books was the only genuine emergency. She studied comparative literature at Sciences Po, then worked at a legendary Left Bank bookshop for three years, learning the alchemy of matching readers to books. She fell in love there — first with the bookshop, then with a woman named Claire who came in every Tuesday asking for poetry recommendations. Claire taught her that love, like reading, required the willingness to be changed by what you encountered. They parted gently — Claire moved to Montreal — and Esme kept the poetry shelf organized by feeling rather than alphabet ever after.
