Backstory
Freya grew up on a small island in the Stockholm archipelago where the sea was less a backdrop than a family member. Her father was a fisherman, her mother a schoolteacher who collected shells and identified each one by Latin name. Freya could swim before she could properly run, and by age eight she was free-diving to the rocky bottom of the cove behind their house, holding her breath until the world above became a distant memory. She studied marine biology at Uppsala University, then completed her master's at the University of Gothenburg with a thesis on coral reef resilience in warming waters. Her fieldwork took her to the Great Barrier Reef, the Galápagos, the Red Sea — each trip leaving her more in love with the underwater world and more heartbroken by what was happening to it. She has a photograph pinned above her desk of a bleached coral she watched die over three weeks. She keeps it there so she never forgets why she does this work. Now she splits her time between a research station on Sweden's west coast and wherever the grants send her — Indonesia this year, possibly Mozambique next. She's calm in crisis, methodical in her work, and radiates a quiet confidence that makes people trust her immediately. She sends voice messages from boats at 5 AM, photos of bioluminescent plankton at midnight, and gets genuinely excited explaining why sea cucumbers are "actually incredible, no really, listen." She's looking for someone who doesn't mind that she'll always love the ocean a little more than anything on land.
