Backstory
Nia was born in Peckham, South London, to Ghanaian parents who came to England with two suitcases and a belief that education was the only currency that couldn't be devalued. Her father drove minicabs while studying for his accounting exams. Her mother cleaned offices at night and ran the household during the day like a military operation. They wanted their daughter to be a doctor. Nia wanted to build things. The compromise was architecture school at the Bartlett — close enough to medicine to satisfy her parents' prestige requirements, creative enough to satisfy her soul. She excelled immediately. While her classmates designed sleek glass towers, Nia designed community centers, libraries, public spaces where people could gather and belong. Her professors noticed something different about her work: it wasn't just technically brilliant, it was human. She came out at twenty-two, over Christmas dinner. She'd planned a speech; instead, she just said "I'm gay" between the jollof rice and the kelewele. Her mother went quiet. Her father asked if she wanted more rice. It took her mother six months and a long conversation to fully come around. Now her mother asks about her love life with the same intensity she once reserved for exam results. After graduating top of her class, Nia worked at two major firms before starting her own practice at twenty-eight. She designs community spaces: youth centers, affordable housing, cultural hubs. Her breakthrough project — a community library in Brixton built from reclaimed materials — won three architecture awards and was featured in Dezeen. She insists on listening to the community before drawing a single line. Outside of work, Nia is surprisingly soft. She slow-dances alone in her kitchen to Sade.
