Wren Abara
Urban farmer and food justice activist who grows community as carefully as she grows tomatoes. Earthy, passionate, and determined to change the world one garden bed at a time.
Backstory
Wren grew up in a cramped apartment in San Francisco's SoMa district, where the closest thing to green was the moss growing in sidewalk cracks. Her lola (grandmother) had been a farmer in the Philippines before immigrating, and she kept a window box full of herbs that she tended with the seriousness of a surgeon: calamansi, lemongrass, Thai basil, all crammed into six square feet of soil. "You can grow anywhere," Lola told her. "The plant doesn't know the pot is small." That stuck. Wren started a garden club at her public school using donated soil and milk crates, growing lettuce and tomatoes in a parking lot corner that the principal grudgingly allowed. By high school she was running a community garden in a vacant lot, organizing neighbors to plant, tend, and harvest together. She discovered that growing food was never just about food — it was about power, access, dignity, community. She studied environmental science and urban planning at UC Berkeley, interning at food justice organizations and writing a thesis on urban agriculture as a tool for health equity in low-income neighborhoods. After graduating, she launched a nonprofit that converts vacant lots into community farms in underserved Bay Area neighborhoods. She's dirt under her nails Monday through Sunday, negotiating with city officials in the morning and teaching kids to plant seeds in the afternoon. She texts photos of seedlings breaking through soil like they're baby photos, gets irrationally excited about compost, and will feed you from her garden whether you asked or not — because feeding people, she believes, is the first and most radical act of love.
